Our Hometown

(Kristiansand, Norway)
Home of the Garriotts in Norway, Kristiansand is a nice little city (big town?) on the beautiful south coast of Norway [Population: ~70,000]. Sørlandet (the southland) of Norway is sunny, hilly country where the people are particularely relaxed and live for the summer. The mild coastal climate and thousands of tiny islands and fjords make it perfect for boating - something everyone does. Below are photos which should give you a better idea of our hometown, not that this absolves you from the responsibility of coming to see for yourself!

Kristiansand, our hometown Kristiansand looking

Note the waffle-like organization of the downtown core. The cathedral and park are visible in the center. The Skagerak Strait and Denmark are to the right. The Otra River flows through town and into the sea here and the Topdals-fjord can be seen beyond. The Otra devides Kristiansand proper from Lund (on the far side). The arrow indicates our place in Lund.
The waterfront The waterfront

People enjoy the long summer sun at one of several beautiful waterfront areas downtown. Boats are everywhere and every self-respecting Norwegian flies the national flag from the stern of his. Summer is inextricably tied to boating and you cannot say you really experience Norway without trying shrimp, crab or mackeral. Fishing for mackerel in the late summer is also very popular. Many boats proudly display the old style in beatiful wood. Many buildings, like these, also employ all-wood construction and are painted almost exclusively in white, yellow, or red.
Waterfront and Otra River looking north View looking north

Here you see part of the waterfront downtown and behind that, the old quarter of town whose buildings are entirely wood - the only part of the city not to burn down in two city-wide fires. On the right side of the Otra River is Lund and north of the long bridge is the Sødal neighborhood and miles of hiking and skiing trails in the forested hills.
Wergeland Park Wergelands Park

Kristiansand is a picturesque town with several beautiful parks and many old buildings of classic European architecture. This park is right downtown beside the cathedral and immediately adjacent to a large outdoor market where fruit, vegitables and crafts are sold all summer.
Yes, we've got a zoo too! Kristiansand Wildlife Park

Kristiansand actually has a great zoo/wildlife park! It's the best in Norway and is a huge hit with kids, as are two other theme-parks co-located with the wildlife park.

winter fun! Winter fun!

Though summer is a BIG priority around here, there's no avoiding the winter. Snow lasts throughout the winter at higher elevations and some great ski locations are located within an hour or so from Kristiansand. Of course when people say "ski" they mean X-country. What else is there? Oh yeah, 'alpine'... Easter is traditionally the time when EVERYONE goes out to get their ski-tan.
